There’s something so romantic and badass about stripping the whole getting married thing down to the floorboards. Something so headstrong and counterculture in focusing on the nuptials of two individuals who want to declare their love for each other sans the huge wedding party, the three tier cake, the 9 piece band, or the expensive wedding venue.
Here are a few reasons why I love elopements and why I’d love to be your Boulder or Denver elopement photographer.
Most elopements are just you and your beloved (plus an officiant or a photographer) and maybe a few friends or family members. This sort of pared down nuptials creates space for raw, unfiltered emotion — your vows aren’t a performance in front of a large audience; they’re a promise between you and your partner. This results in deeply meaningful moments that feel 100% real because they are 100% real.
You and your beloved alone set the expectations for your nuptials. By doing so, you dodge the stress of managing a large guest list (and playing politics with who gets to come to the wedding and who doesn’t) and the pressure of following religious or family traditions that don’t feel true to you. When you elope, you wear what you want, say what you want, and design your day around your love and relationship with your partner. This day is about you and your partner. It’s as simple as that.
Let’s be honest: Weddings are expensive! Like, really expensive (In another lifetime, I photographed the nuptials of couples who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on their weddings).
But if you’re not dead set on a wedding extravaganza, why not pare it down to the bare essentials and pocket the money that would’ve been spent on the wedding for something else you might want in life?
Elopements strip away the unnecessary extravagance of big weddings while keeping what matters the most — the love, the intimacy, the vows, and the unforgettable Boulder, Colorado setting (but maybe splurge for a great photographer to capture this once-in-a-lifetime event)!
You can elope practically anywhere in Boulder County but here are a few of my favorite places:
1). Sunrise Amphitheater on Flagstaff Mountain. There’s a nominal fee to reserve the location for your elopement, but it’s quite affordable and the views are spectacular.
2). Halfway House, also on Flagstaff, is a great spot for a low-key elopement or micro wedding. Here’s a link to one I shot in the spring of 2025.
3). Coot Lake is a beautiful body of water northeast of Boulder. If it’s just the two of you, there are definitely some spots where you could say your vows in private with the gorgeous foothills to the Rockies as your backdrop.
4). Brainard Lake about an hour west of Boulder is a beautiful area to tie the knot in during the warmer weather months.
5). Chautauqua Park is an iconic location that my own brother was married at years ago. Whether you’re doing a micro wedding or a lean and mean elopement, there are plenty of upsides to getting married at the stunning and perfectly located Chautauqua Park.
